RPM takes Brands Hatch British GT Spoils

Last weekend saw the CML supported RPM Porsche take to the track for the penultimate time in 2006. From the official testing on the friday and Saturday morning it was clear that the RPM car would be a contender for the win as it posted a lap time of 1m 34.33s with its nearest competitors and championship leaders only managing a 1m33.95s lap.

A qualifying approached the clouds came in and it began to rain. Seeing this the RPM car made the decision to go for a full wet set-up, a decision that was later to hamper it. In the first qualifying session Bradley Ellis drove the car managing a 4th in class qualify and 10th overall position. Mortimer however was not as successful and could only muster a 15th overall and 9th in class, his worst qualify of the season. Clearly disappointed the with the result the team looked forward to a better race that afternoon. For the race the circuit had dried and once more the RPM car began to dominate. Ellis making up a position every lap for the opening four laps which left him in the class lead for his Hand over to Mortimer. A slow stop dropped the pairing back to 4th but a determined drive by Mortimer brought them back to second place and with 20 minutes to go a bold move to the inside of championship rival Phil Keen also in GT3 Porsche at the entrance to the 110 mph Hawthorn corner saw the car back at the front and stretching its lead once more. This was a lead it was to hold to the flag. Race 2 was much the same with Mortimer bringing himself upto 3rd before the changeover. With 2 minutes left to run Ellis had made it to lead looking only to clash with a slower Aston DBR9 at druids dropping him 3rd on the results sheets. All in all however it was still a very successful weekend and the pair cannot wait for the final round at Silverstone.
