CML/Frankley Winter Series Rnd 6

CML/Frankley Winter Series Rnd 6

The final round of the CML/Frankley winter series took place in beautiful spring weather this weekend.

The great conditions provided a bone dry track and super high traction conditions, unlike the rest of the series that has been generally run in damp and slippy conditions. With the upcoming BRCA national round not far away, some drivers opted to come and test on the saturday also which was sensible and great for track time. Round 1 saw a surprise with David Spashett going quickest after setting a great time in a early heat which nobody was to better in the rest of the round. Round 2 and pre-event favourite Darren Bloomfiled went about proving his pace by taking the round win from Simon Willetts and Craig Drescher with his RC8. Round 3 saw another great drive from Darren to go 6 seconds clear of Craig Drescher and Graham Alsop and thus giving him the pole position slot. The main final started with Darren getting away cleanly and unfortunatley Craig Drescher making an error on lap 1 dropping him back in the pack. The first few minutes saw young Matthew Lewis driving very well to be in contention with Darren and just behind Matthew were Graham Alsop and Jon Hazelwood. Jon moved up over the first few laps and got by Graham and set about trying to catch Matthew. A couple of quick fire errors blunted his charge and gave him more work to do. Championship favourite and 2007/2008 champion Simon Willetts had a nightmare first 5 minutes and was fighting back. Darren was away at the front and uncatchable by this stage, but the main interest was the fight for fourth, Jon Hazelwood held the position with Simon Willetts needing the place for the title. As it was Simon couldn't quite make it as Jon drove great under pressure and thus on taking the flag Darren Bloomfield was crowned champion with Graham Alsop taking second in the race and second in the Championship with an unlucky Simon Willetts in third. So once again CML would like to thank Frankley Model Car Club and it's members for putting on a great series and we would also like to congratulate Darren Bloomfield on a close Championship victory.
